Re: sale items at Emergency Essentials
SB, I wonder how these would hold up in the car. I have all my bug out stuff but like to keep an extra blanket a gallon of water and some type of food like this in case of being stranded in the car.. This might be a good candidate

We used to have something like this for survival rations in the Air Force. The old ones could really get hard, and tough to chew, so having water available was important. They were tastie though, especially when hungry and out in the woods with no Burger Kings around. Most people don't realize how lethargic you get when you haven't eaten much in 3 or 4 days and then have to go walk 10 miles. s |
Re: sale items at Emergency Essentials
It says they are okay up to 300 degreesF. I bought some of these around Y2K. They've been stored since.

Re: sale items at Emergency Essentials
The most important question: has anyone ever EATEN one of those?!
Just kidding...how are they in taste & texture, really? |

We could use a field report, and YOU are it. |

I've read that the high temps in your car can do bad things for stored water and am wondering about the best methods for this. |

Re: sale items at Emergency Essentials
I haven't eaten THIS particular brand, but I store the Datrex compressed bars and HAVE eaten them.
They were OK. The only side effect seems to be that you WILL NEED to have TP on hand, because when it works it's way through your system, you have a ... hmm, how to say this delicately... a MOVING experience. This site also sells Datrex compressed food bar as well as this one. I will say that I tried these during my daily routine. I was not starving hungry. I had eaten earlier in the day. So I was not a 'true survival' tester. But I COULD eat it. And it didn't taste too bad. I would imagine if you are in a real SHTF scenario and found yourself extremely hungry, these or the Datrex would work for you. As an aside, my wife and I make our own MRE's. We buy small white cardboard boxes. Then we fill them with canned and dried food WE actually eat on a daily basis. My entree is beanie weanies. My breakfast entree is two packs of brown sugar/cinnamon oatmeal. My wife's entree is tuna and crackers, which she eats all the time. Her breakfast entree is the same as mine. We both have tea, coffee and a tang/lemonade mix that we make ourselves and store in airtight containers. Plus chewing gum, hard candy, etc. Plus several single portion hand cleaner towels. And a deck of playing cards in each box we make (staves off boredom). In a seperate box, we carry two rolls of TP, a box of kitchen matches, trioxane fuel and a folding trioxane stove (two of them actually), plus two french mil surp two nested square pans with handles which allows us to cook things in or just heat water fairly easily. And yes, I have used the trioxane tabs and stoves to heat water and other items with. They work well, though sometimes you need two tabs to really get water boiling, but I live in Denver, where the air is very thin. |

It's like a hard, chewy yet crumbly lemon cake. Not delicious, but quite edible. |

I drink the water out of it regularly so rotation isn't an issue. I have drank water that was in my trunk for a good 2 years (regular water bottle sealed ice mountain) without ill effects. Bottle was distorted a bit. Went down easy. IMO provided the water is factory sealed in a sturdy bottle no worries. FYI I had some of those 3 liter milk gallon like plastic bottles spontainiously spring leaks in under 6 months of storage in my pantry. I refuse to buy anything other than milk in those things now. Thanks for the heads up on the bars. Wanted to try one. Free shipping means now I can, lol. |

Re: sale items at Emergency Essentials
I have a friend that has been ready for the end of Modern Civilization for at least 20 years, I asked him for a filed report on the viability of these " life boat/Bomb shelter foods"....................... I quote here his response:
. . "This is a "live" report.. I have an open Datrex bar in my hand. Smells like coconut and is oily to the touch. Nice texture and a bit crumbly. Leaves a filmy feel in your mouth like a big mac does. Flavor?? I can't name it. It is not bad per say. But no matter what level of hunger i can not invision ever longing for the taste of a datrex food bar. One bar does not give the sensation of having eaten anything. End of "live" report." .. ..There ya have it. I myself have 14 units ordered and in transit. |
